Choose a Consistent Color Theme
Unconscious or otherwise, color can evoke emotions, inspire reactions, and change modes of thinking. It can excite or soothe your mood, raise or lower expectations. Too many colors can cause confusion. When choosing a good color theme, choose around three or four colors and stick with those colors throughout the theme. This makes for a well thought out display and soothing to viewers.
Lay a Foundation With Colored Flood Lights
This is very important to the overall lighting of the scene. Colored flood lights let you light up a large space or focus on specific features. It provides the base for everything else to grow on. Pointing the flood lights at props like skeletons, tombstones and ghosts will make them appear like they are glowing in the dark. Buy LED spotlights to change the colors and reuse them anywhere.
Put Colored Bulbs in Existing Outdoor Lighting
A quick and easy way to get some additional lighting is to just replace all the exterior lighting with color themed bulbs including porch lights, path lights, garage lights and flood lights. You don't have to hang anything and it still provides light for guests.
Install Halloween String Lights
Just as you would with Christmas lighting, put up lights on the house, fences, bushes and anywhere you would normally add them.
Add Strobe Lights in Bushes
Mini-strobe lights in bushes and to accent certain displays to make for a cool effect causing the shadows in the branches.
Add a Lighted Witch's Cauldron
What Halloween display is complete without a lighted witch's cauldron? Get a huge iron pot or prop pot and add a fog atomizer/mister to give an awesome effect. Here's one on Amazon. If you use a regular mister with no lights, put bowl in the bottom of the cauldron with the mister and some lighting around the bowl at the bottom of the cauldron.
Use Lighting and Fog Machines
Lighting machines can do a lot of cool effects with your lighting setup. You can use them to create storms with lightning, strobes and fog. If you want to make a graveyard with a lightning storm and fog these can come in very handy.
Add Inflatable Yard Decorations
Inflatables are very popular and can fill in space for large yards. They are also a huge attention getter. There are hundreds of different designs including skeletons, ghosts and many more. Kids love inflatables.
Use Outdoor LED Neon Motifs
LED neo motifs look just like neon signs but are LED. There are tons of different types to choose from including ghosts, pumpkins and even headstones.
These are just a few idea. Enjoy!
